Ed signed with the Buffalo Bills in 1963 after playing his college football at Notre Dame. 

He played a variety of positions during his 6 years with Buffalo, including quarterback, half back, and wide receiver.

Ed won two consecutive AFL Championships with the Bills in 1964 and 1965 and was named an AFL All-Star in 1965.

He scored a total of six touchdowns in his 83 career games with the Bills.

In 1998, Ed was recipient of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Distinguished Service Award.

After retiring from football, Rutkowski served as Erie County Executive from 1979-1987.

He currently resides in Hamburg, NY
